Marcus Watkins at Substack’s Free Black Thought comments well on the large number of casual racist comments among US Young Conservatives chat groups. He’s right, and Vice-President Vance’s brushing it off is insufficient.
Well said, Marcus. Also…despite the terms used, free speech does its job here. If the Conservative/Republican movement fail to grasp the two-fold nature of freedom –
1. Freedom of expression as the only way to ensure freedom of conscience (and create ideological error correction over time through the debris of hot debate), and
2. Self-restraint to show trustworthiness and a desire for common humanity,
– then they will lose the next election once again, and deserve to. In my opinion both Dems and Cons have repeatedly failed to do these two things for some time. Discipline imposed without freedom is State tyranny. Freedom without demonstrable self-restraint is Private tyranny. There is no perfect politics, perfect people, or perfect systems, but either party can prevail electorally simply by bringing out a support for individual freedom along with demonstrable self-restraint that shows humanity for the whole electorate.
After a long period of polarization, “Love thy neighbour” might be a simple and effective mantra for 2028.
